Helen Brasinika, the head designer and project manager of the Chromosome X dining table, drew inspiration from the X chromosome's role in determining the female gender. This inspiration is reflected in the table's design, which features an abstract X shape made of two different pieces accentuated by a deep line. The same abstract X is reflected on the floor with the base structure, creating a visually striking effect.
The table's unique properties lie in its design and structure. Designed to seat eight people, the table's arrow arrangement encourages diners to interact in a new way. The contrast of teak veneer for the top and white for the base lightens the lower part, giving more emphasis on the top. The structure, made of three different pieces, allows for easy assembly and transportation.
The Chromosome X table is made of lacquered wood for the legs and pressed teak veneers for the top. With a length of 3200 mm, a depth of 100 mm, and a height of 750 mm, the table is a sizable piece that can accommodate a large gathering. The base structure comprises three pieces made of white lacquered wood RAL 9016, with vertical supports fixed at 90 degrees and wide angles for better structure.
Brasinika's design process involved extensive research on irregular shapes in dining tables and more sculptural forms in leg or base structures. The choice of Chromosome X was influenced by its interesting shape and its representation of vital gender differences. The design challenges included creating a sculptural value to the furniture, providing seating for eight to 12 people, and ensuring a perfect match with dark wood or flooring material. The top was treated naturally with beeswax to protect it from stains, avoiding the use of chemicals and VOC emitting substances.
The Chromosome X dining table has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2013. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
In conclusion, Helen Brasinika's Chromosome X dining table is a testament to the power of innovative design. Its unique structure and materials, coupled with its inspiration drawn from genetics, make it a standout piece that redefines the dining experience. The table's recognition as a Golden A' Furniture Design Award winner further underscores its design excellence and innovation.
